Hotel Chelsea Has an Infamous History
Hotel Chelsea, simply known as the Chelsea, is a very popular historical landmark of New York. It is very conveniently located at the junction between Seventh and Eighth Avenue in the Chelsea district of Manhattan. It has gained most of its popularity after it hosted few famous figures, such as Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Alice Cooper, Francesco Clemente and many other musicians, actors, designers, and writers. Also, it was the setting of some great television productions like “Sid and Nancy”, “Hotel Chelsea” and “An American Family”. Now the hotel does not accept residents for an undetermined period of time, but there still are individuals who live there since before this change of policy. In August 2012 the hotel was temporarily closed for renovations and it is expected to be opened soon in a much better shape.
In addition, since 1977 it was declared by the National Register of Historic Places a New York City landmark, because it exists for such a long time and has hosted so many important figures. It was the place where some of the greatest poets have written their most beautiful works, the venue where all kinds of movies and sitcoms have been staged and where so many dramas have taken place. It is basically part of the life of the city. Situated in the core of Manhattan, it is now regarded as a symbol. Not to mention that its architecture and structure are also specific to the area in which it has been built.
One may be interested in knowing that it has been firstly opened to the public in 1884 and it was one of the finest buildings in town, offering first class apartments. Also, guests were attracted by its interesting style. The twelve storey building was entirely made of red brick and it blended harmoniously the Gothic style with the Queen Anne Revival current. It had small, but stylish balconies, decorated with lovely flowers, and staircases, available only to hotel guests. Also, at that time it was the tallest building in the city and as expected the towering structure attracted countless guests every year. Unfortunately, in time, due to the economic instability its owner changed several times and it was closed for a large period of time. It was sold for really high prices and each of its owners tried to give the place a personal touch. Some of them managed to do that, but some left just as they came.
Currently, the hotel is still closed for renovation and the current holder is Joseph Chetrit, who bought it for no less than $80 million. Reservations cannot be made anymore, but permanent residents still remain, putting in danger their health. All the artworks and valuable pieces the hotel featured were removed during the renovation and it promises to come up with a new, unique look that will attract as many guests as it once did. Hotel Chelsea will always remain a symbol of New York and those who visit the city are invited to check it out. Their accommodation will be great and the area puts at their disposal all kinds of entertaining activities.
