New Roman Spa in TriBeCa

New York’s TriBeCa neighborhood is home to Aire Ancient Baths, a Spain-based relaxing retreat created in the style of ancient Greek and Roman baths. By the end of the 5th century, wealthy Romans used the baths as a way of entertaining guests, and the exquisite buildings and features truly made the bath houses a paradise that was fit for royalty.
Aire Ancient Baths brings this same refinement to New York, one of the world’s busiest cities, where people could definitely use some down time. The baths could also pose potential health benefits for those who suffer from conditions like arthritis, fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue.
The location offers warm, hot and cold baths—guests are encouraged to enjoy their baths in this order of temperature to relax the muscles, and to repeat the process as often as needed, similar to the ancient method. The warm pools are a comfortable 97 degrees Fahrenheit, the hot pools are a steamy 102 degrees, and cool baths have two temperatures—some are 61 degrees, while others are 46 degrees.
Services include the thermal bath with a 45 minute massage, and the Kerala ritual, which consists of a personal welcome, time in the thermal pool, and an Ayurvedic ritual that involves light massage and a facial that involves acupuncture and aromatherapy. In the steam room, which is 102 degrees Fahrenheit, is enhanced with aromatherapy oils that invigorate the senses, like peppermint, eucalyptus, or jasmine. Peppermint can clear the sinus cavities and help with indigestion, while eucalyptus is helpful for people with allergies, and jasmine is an antidepressant that soothes an upset stomach.
Patrons can also take advantage of the two-hour packages, in which guests can take advantage of the propeller jet baths, spend time in the steam room, soak in the salt water pool and meditate in the thermal and relaxation rooms. Aire Ancient Baths also offers massage rooms where two or four attendants will help to relieve muscle tension and pain in the joints.
The basic thermal bath costs $75 for two hours, but you can also add an hour-long, four-handed massage to your service—the cost is $210. In addition to the Kerala ritual, patrons can also choose an olive oil ritual to body of impurities, or a red wine ritual, which run near the $500 mark.
Aire Ancient Baths is located at 88 Franklin Street, TriBeCa, NY, 10013. You can make reservations by visiting www.ancientbathsny.com, or by calling 212-274-3777.
